TheInternationalFinanceCorporation(IFC),theprivatelendingarmoftheWorldBankGroup,hasproposedtoinvest$3.85millionforthephaseoneoftheSemeikhonriverportprojectinMandalayRegion,accordingtothedisclosureonSeptember22.
Theportandharboroperationsproject,locatedattheeastbankifAyeyarwadyriver,willbefundedbyIFCInfraVentures,a$millionGlobalInfrastructureProjectDevelopmentFund,setuptoaddressconstraintstoprivateinvestmentsininfrastructureprojects.
Theportprojectisaco-developmentwithMandalayMyothaIndustrialDevelopmentPublicCoLtd(MMID),aMandalay-baseddeveloperofmixed-usedindustrialzonesincludinglogisticdevelopment,residentialdevelopmentandroadandtransportation.
ThefundingthroughIFCInfraVenturesoffersearlystageriskcapitalandexperiencedprojectdevelopmentsupportwhilethefundingisconvertibletoequity.
TheprojectsawajointventuresignatorybetweenMMIDandIFClastmonthandisthefirstinlandwaterportthataimstosupportMandalay’seconomicgrowthandfacilitatetradeintheregion.
TheannouncementstatedthattheSemeikhonriverportprojectwillhouseonefloatingberth,andbargesand50tonnecranestohandle,tonnegeneralcargo,containersandrollon-rolloffcargo.
The-acreSemeikhonriverportprojectislocatedattheeastbankofAyeyarwadyRiver,about17Kmfromthe10,acreMyothaIndustrialPark(MIP)inMandalayregion,alsodevelopedbyMMIDinpartnershipwiththeMandalayRegionGovernment.MMIDischairedbyAungWinKhaingwhoalsoleadsRoyalHi-TechGroup.
Myanmarisinneedofmoreprivatepublicpartnershipinvestmentsforitsinfrastructureneeds.Developingcountriesaresaidtoneedaround$2trillionayearforinfrastructureinvestmentsuntiltomeetcurrentgrowthratesandfuturedemands.
